The fire started around 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 5, at 1130 Williams St. in Bridgeport, said Scott Appleby, director of Emergency Management for Bridgeport.

According to Appleby, the first arriving units reported fire on the second floor which had extended to the third floor.

A second alarm was called on arrival based on the life hazard and the number of people who needed to be rescued from the upper floors by firefighters, Appleby said.

Firefighters rescued numerous people from the upper floors, he added.

In addition, three women and two children were reportedly rescued by a man who was working on a house nearby.

Approximately 65 residents have been displaced, Appleby said.

The Red Cross will be assisting them with lodging.

The fire is currently under investigation with the Fire Marshal’s office.
